IT’S the most contentious issue in Penang – you are either with Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng or state development officer Nik Ali Mat Yunus as the two trade verbal blows each day, dragging in politicians and other civil servants.

The situation is becoming less civil by the day as the two call each other names while politicians seize the opportunity to question how the issue has degenerated.

Subsidy cuts: Get our act right

Let' call a spade a spade. No matter how big or small the amount, a price hike is still one as long as the consumer has to end up paying more.

It does not matter whether it is an “upward price adjustment” or “subsidy rationalisation”. Those are just words to describe the gradual subsidy cuts.
